Failed to locate start of ORPA off Old Wife's Way (not surprising, as it turned out) so I made a wide diversion and walked it from the other end, discovering that it was necessary to approach the ORPA from a gate about 50 yards west of its notional start.

The main feature was a scramble along the side of a ravine through Mains Wood, where the footpath was officially closed because of a landslide.  Through judicious use of walking poles and by grabbing hold of any convenient clumps of vegetation, we emerged without mishap.

Note: The fanciful name "Turkey Carpet" does not seem to appear on an OS map until the 1970s, when it is shown, for example, on a 1974-5 1:2500 map as "Turkeu Carpet Picnic Place" to the east of the Silpho- Reesty Bank road.  Is this possibly a corruption of nearby Thirlsey?

I recced my Sunday RA walk.  It was bitterly cold at the Hole, so I stripped off to don my leggings, and wrapped up well.  The sun soon shone through, however. I lunched at the Low Bride Stones and had only a couple of unplanned diversions.  I had hoped to climb Blakey Topping, but time was moving on.
